The First Step to Change

If you aren’t aware of something, how can you work on it? How can you shift it, grow from it, or take different steps to create different outcomes? You can’t change something if you don’t even see it yet.

Awareness is where it all begins.

I mean… I don’t realize I need more ice cream… until I notice it’s gone.

I don’t realize the dishwasher needs to be fixed until I become aware it’s not actually working. In order to take action and do something about it, I have to become aware of the situation.

I could tell myself the dishwasher is working and keep wondering why the dishes are still dirty after it runs… But if I want clean dishes, I have to admit that something might need adjusting.

The first step to change is awareness.

The same thing happens in our lives, just not always as obvious.

I couldn’t set boundaries until I became aware of what boundaries actually were… and that I didn’t have many. Once that awareness clicked, I started noticing the boundaries I did have, and the ones I needed. The ones that would help me feel more comfortable, less resentful, and more aligned with honoring myself.

And if I’m being honest… awareness isn’t always the easy part.

Admitting you’re struggling with something can feel hard. It can feel easier (or at least we tell ourselves it’s easier) to pretend we have it all together. Because once we become aware, sometimes guilt or shame tries to sneak in… like there’s something wrong with us.

But there isn’t.

It’s just information.

Awareness isn’t a judgment, it’s insight. It’s an opportunity to see something in a new way, to consider something different, to open yourself up to growth.

And when you allow yourself to see it and admit that something needs to change, you’re not failing… you’re taking responsibility. You’re choosing to do something about it.

That is self-love.

It’s choosing yourself. It’s deciding you deserve to feel better, to live better, to show up as the version of you that feels most aligned.

Because the truth is… you can be really successful in one area of your life and still be struggling in another.

We aren’t meant to be perfect in everything.

We’re meant to notice, to learn, and to grow.

Reflection: What is something you’ve been avoiding acknowledging? What feels hard about facing it? What might this awareness be trying to show you?

Let your answers come without judgment. You don’t have to fix anything right now, just notice.

Action Step: Write down what you’re becoming aware of, and carry that awareness with you this week. Each time it shows up, pause and notice it instead of pushing it away.
